Vignettes is a beautiful collection of classical, contemporary and jazz-inspired music performed by acclaimed Australian musicians Jane Rosenson, principal harpist with Opera Australia, and Emma Sholl, Associate Principal Flute with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Bringing together flute, alto flute and harp, Vignettes moves through enchanting melodies, vibrant rhythms and richly expressive compositions that are reflective, joyful, sensuous and at times wonderfully jazzy. The album features original works written especially for Jane and Emma alongside their own arrangements of much-loved and unexpected compositions. Selected tracks are also accompanied by double bass and percussion, adding further depth and texture to the collection. Highlights include their arrangement of Nigel Westlake’s Penguin Dance, featured in the IMAX film Antarctica, a work by Australian guitarist and composer Roger Lock inspired by his relationship with the ocean, Mark Isaacs’ Barcarolle and three movements from Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano. From beautiful classical music to jazz-infused chamber works and contemporary compositions by leading Australian composers, Vignettes is a wonderfully varied listening experience.
