Worked in the old animal style Scrollwork curls along the foot of each wolf, and above it the beast rears with its head thrown back and its jaw wide open. The body is worked in overlapping ridges that read as layered fur, and the whole shape narrows towards the base where the curling forms take over. Viking age smiths rarely drew an animal plainly. They wound it through tendrils and interlace until the creature and the ornament were one continuous line. This piece keeps that habit, so the curls at the base belong to the wolf rather than framing it. If you wear a wolf for Fenrir, the reference reads clearly here. Our article on Fenrir sets out the myth of the bound wolf. Metal, finish and fitting The pair photographed carries a darkened antique finish, with shadow settled deep in the curling forms and the raised edges left bright. That contrast is what gives the relief its depth.
