7 BLACK was inspired by the 1992 all-black Comme des Garcons collection (which Bill Cunningham photographed) and Edward Gorey’s macabre cartoons (sometimes as eerie backdrops for t he Comme des Garcons dresses). BLACK is about darkness, the night, shadows, and what you may or may not see when you squint your eyes. A traditional artist’s portfolio case, tied with three black ribbons, provide the concept for the packaging. The die-cut letters are based on tears made with scrap paper that enabled different first pages to peek through the cover. François Berthoud’s sinister fashion illustrations and 1,500 original hand-made photo collages by young photographer Kristina Colovic, are among the most cherished contributions to this issue.
