Vitex, or Negundo Chastetree (Vitex negundo) is a bonsai species of profound character, celebrated for its incredibly expressive and weathered trunk. The wood naturally twists, hollows, and bleaches over time, creating silhouettes that evoke the ethereal forms of Taihu stones, rolling clouds, or even soaring dragons. These skeletal, sculptural lines provide a powerful visual tension and an abstract structural beauty. Its fine, compound leaves also carry a subtle, refreshing fragrance, adding a quiet, scholarly elegance to its presence. A fascinating fun fact: the Negundo Chastetree is a revered staple in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its roots, leaves, and seeds (known as "Huang Jing Zi") are valued for their therapeutic properties. This remarkably resilient species adapts perfectly to Hong Kong’s hot and humid subtropical climate. It thrives in outdoor settings such as balconies, terraces, or rooftops with ample sunlight. Routine care is straightforward: maintain consistent soil moisture and avoid waterlogging to preserve its rugged, dynamic form. Combining the weathered texture of ancient stone with the vitality of living wood, the Negundo Chastetree captures the raw, unyielding energy of nature.
