Andrei Sakharov was a Soviet nuclear physicist, dissident, and activist for disarmament, peace, and human rights. As the chief designer of the Soviet thermonuclear weapons, Sakharo v later became a strong advocate for civil liberties and reforms in the Soviet Union, which led to state persecution.
