They are honoring their roots by going back all the way to 1943 when they were still the "VMF-214" and called themselves "Boyington's Bastards" after their famous commander Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. On March 25, 2022, the squadron was re-designated as Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 214 (VMFA-214) as it switched to flying the F-35B Lightning II.
