Newsprint packing paper bound with the basketry technique called “coiling.” Traditionally this has meant a core material like straw, grass, or pine needles wrapped with a binding m aterial like reed, raffia, or something else flexible and flat. I wanted to see if I could make paper serve both of these functions by bunching up paper strips into my core and folding, gluing, and flattening paper “reeds” for my binding. The result is a truly substantial piece that, I hope, speaks volumes about what we can achieve by applying knowledge and skills that we already have to materials now abundant around us.
