Vriesea incurva seeds grow into an epiphytic tank bromeliad native to the wet tropical biome of the Caribbean, Central America and northern South America — from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti and Puerto Rico south through Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana and Bolivia. Originally described as Tillandsia incurva by Grisebach; transferred to Vriesea by Read. Synonyms include T. dactylifera (É.Morren ex Baker) and T. digitata (Mez). The epithet incurva means 'curved inward' or 'incurved', referring to the recurved, inward-curving leaves or inflorescence bracts. A tank epiphyte of the subfamily Tillandsioideae producing the glossy, smooth-edged leaf rosette with a central water-holding tank and vivid, long-lasting bract display typical of the genus. Note: two different Vriesea bear similar names — this species is V. incurva (Griseb.) Read, wider-ranging than V. incurvata Gaudich. (SE. & S. Brazil only). The genus Vriesea was named after Dutch botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese (1806–1862).
