Benjamin Chee-Chee Cultural Background: Ojibway, Temagami Reserve, Bear Island Ontario Born in Temagami, Ontario, Chee Chee largely taught himself to draw and paint. His father died when he was two months old and he lost track of his mother. One reason behind his drive for success as a painter was his ambition to be reunited with her. He was a prominent member of the second generation of Woodland Indian painters, a native art movement that began in the early nineteen-sixties and has since become one of the important art schools in Canada. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Chee Chee pursued an economical graphic style, a reduction of line and image more in keeping with mainstream international modern art. Il n’a que 2 mois quand son père meurt et il perd ensuit toute trace de sa mère. Sa volonté de réussir comme peintre s’explique en partie par son désir de retrouver sa mère. Il fut un membre de premier plan de la 2ème génération des peintres indiens du groupe Woodland, mouvement artistique des Indiens autochtones né au début des années 60 et devenue depuis une des grandes écoles artistiques du Canada. A la différence de nombre de ses contemporains, Chee Chee subit l’influence de l’art abstrait moderne. Alors que la pluspart des jeunes artistes du mouvement Woodland se contentent d’imiter le style du fondateur Norval Morrisseau et d’illustrer leurs mythes et leurs légendes au moyen d’une écriture directe et “primitive”, Chee Chee adopte un style graphique plus dépouillé, réduisant la ligne et l’image selon la tendance principale de l’art moderne dans le monde. A 32 ans, parvenu au sommet de son jeune succès de peintre et auteur de gravure, Chee Chee met tragiquement fin à ses jours.
