A while back he fell in love with a ‘burl’ Claro Walnut slab all the way from California that he just had to have. “Burl” refers to the irregular growths on the side of trees that are the protective response to injury. Don’t let that deter you though, because that results in a curly, gorgeous, wood grain, that runs throughout the slab. The wild figure is complemented by matte black resin throughout, resulting in a stunning aesthetic that would make for a centerpiece in any living room. Burl is extremely rare and expensive to procedure. And the process of filling the voids is very labor intensive. This top is supported by a base of solid black walnut crafted using mortise and tenon joinery with a subtle nod to mid-century design. Chase allowed the natural color of the walnut to shine, leaving it unstained. But it has been finished with three coats of conversion varnish in a satin sheen that gives significant durability suitable for everyday use.
