The tree at Lake Wanaka on New Zealand's South Island is said to have sprouted from an old fence post. However it got there, it has been standing in the lake long enough to become one of the most photographed trees in the world. Chris Bennett was there on a grey day when the water was high, the mountains wrapped in cloud, birds settled in the upper branches. He shot it at 30 seconds — long enough for the lake to go perfectly still, the surface smoothed to the consistency of fog. Black and white was the only choice.
