My first drawing is of Warren King (@wrnking), a fellow alumnus of the Pearl River Mart Artist in Residency program. Warren’s exhibition featured incredible 3D sculptures crafted from cardboard and glue. These pieces beautifully capture the essence of Chinatown’s residents—people chatting on the streets, working at the markets, and playing chess in Columbus Park. He created this series as both a tribute to the individuals who anchor the community and a way to build a deeper connection with them. Warren is not only an extraordinary artist but also a generous soul. During the height of the pandemic, he shared online tutorials to help kids stay creative at home. When I mentioned my kids enjoy origami, he kindly invited us to his studio to see how he builds his sculptures. Honestly, I was just as fascinated as they were.
