Whenever possible the narrative is given in the words of contemporaries, in extracts from letters, journals, and the publications of the time. There are reproductions of the four most famous portraits of Washington, and several facsimiles of pages from his journal and other writings. This copy is from the personal library of Dr. Harry Carlos DeVighne, an adventurous doctor who rose from being a Cuban orphan to Alaska's top surgeon. After seeing history at Wounded Knee and running guns to Cuba, he became a doctor and improved Alaska's healthcare - even organizing the famous 1925 dogsled race to deliver diphtheria medicine.
