Doug Hyde has been the UK's best-selling published artist since 2005 — a title he held for a decade without any apparent effort to court it. His work trades in ordinary moments made monumental: the love that shows up in a shared glance, a walk with a dog, a figure tumbling helplessly toward another. Hyde trained as a painter but built his reputation through a vocabulary of rounded, almost ceramic figures that communicate warmth entirely through posture and colour.. Watchdogs was inspired by Hyde's time in St Ives — the artist has described it as being about 'that feeling of being completely relaxed, breathing it all in, and being at one with the essence of a place.' Two dogs at the water's edge, the sea behind them, the palette holding the blue-grey light of the Cornish coast. One of Hyde's most specific images in terms of place, and one of his most atmospheric.
