Watchmen (2009)Watchmen is Zack Snyder's adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' landmark 1986 graphic novel — widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the medium and long considered unfilmable. Set in an alternate 1985 where the United States won the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon is still president, the film follows a group of retired masked vigilantes who are drawn back into action when one of their number is murdered. Jackie Earle Haley is extraordinary as the uncompromising, morally absolute Rorschach, while Billy Crudup's Dr Manhattan — a godlike being of pure energy — provides the film's most visually spectacular and philosophically complex element. Snyder's direction is faithful to the source material to a degree that divided critics but delighted fans of the graphic novel; the film's visual language, period detail and willingness to engage with Moore's dark themes are all impressive. Dr Manhattan's visual realisation — Billy Crudup's performance-captured portrayal of the blue, omnipotent Dr Manhattan is visually extraordinary; the Mars sequence in particular is one of the film's most beautiful and philosophically rich passages. The opening credits sequence — Set to Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin', it is one of the great opening sequences in superhero cinema; a compressed alternate history of the 20th century told through the lens of masked vigilantism. The period detail — Snyder and production designer Alex McDowell recreate 1985 America with extraordinary care; the alternate history setting is richly detailed and gives the film a distinctive visual identity. The moral complexity — Unlike most superhero films, Watchmen takes seriously the question of what kind of person would actually put on a mask; the film's willingness to present its heroes as damaged, compromised and morally ambiguous is its greatest strength.
