A hand-blown glass watermelon ornament delivers the definitive summer fruit to the tree in painted cross-section — pink flesh, white rind, green skin, and a scatter of black seeds placed individually by a Chive painter who understands that seed placement is the difference between a watermelon that reads as real and one that reads as a graphic design exercise. The three-color gradient from skin to flesh is built wet-on-wet in a single session, each band blending into the next the way actual watermelon layers do when you cut the slice clean and hold it up to the light. A polished brass loop at the rind's curve keeps the pink face aimed toward the tree lights, throwing that particular summer color into a December room where it has no business looking this correct. Chive has painted seasonal subjects since its founding in 2004, choosing colors for the object rather than the calendar. TIFF curates visual experiences that transport people across seasons and continents. This slice does the same work, one branch at a time.
