At the end of it, the land dropped away into steep cliffs above Makapu'u Beach, and the Pacific opened up below. Makapu'u is one of Oahu's most recognisable beaches, known for its bodysurf break and the lighthouse on the headland to the north. From this height, the water's colour shifts from deep blue offshore to turquoise over the reef, and the waves break in long, clean lines against the shore. The cliffs themselves are part of the Ko'olau Range, the eroded remnant of a shield volcano that forms the eastern spine of the island.
