The walling can wait. Two neighbours have stopped at the gate with a flask of tea while the late sun works its way across the fields behind them. The wall is half built, the stones are sorted into piles, the tools are down and there is no obvious intention of picking them up again in the next few minutes. A dog has sat down. The conversation looks like it has been going a while. The wall is the detail worth having, every stone placed individually and lit from one side so that shadow does as much work as colour. Fields and sky behind it are gentler by some margin, which means the difficulty sits in one corner and the rest leaves you room to breathe. Good for a slow evening, and people who have built a wall themselves tend to spend a long time looking at it. Show more
