“When you travel a lot, and when you love to just wander around and get lost, you can end up in the strangest spots. … I don’t know, it must be some sort of built-in radar that often directs me to places that are strangely quiet, or quietly strange.”Wim Wenders—painter, actor, writer, and one of the most successful contemporary filmmakers around—has assembled a fascinating series of large-scale photographs taken from 1983 to 2011 in countries all over the world. We are pleased to be able to offer you a very special photo by the artist as a Collector’s Edition: a street scene of grandiose melancholy, set in Butte, Montana. Quiet and deserted, a picture that looks as if it could have been painted by Edward Hopper. About it, Wenders casually writes that he met a man who said he had hit the street lamp years ago with his car and the lamp has been crooked ever since. Cineastes will of course recognize the motif from the poster for Wenders’ Don’t Come Knocking (2005)—and perhaps Sam Shepard will come around the corner at any minute and lean up against the pole.
