What the Water Keeps begins with the smallest vessel imaginable, a single paper boat drifting on water so still it becomes a mirror. There is no wind in this scene, no current, only a fold of paper holding its shape against the dark.The image is not painted onto the acrylic glass, nor printed beneath it. It exists because material has been taken away. Every contour of the boat, every trace of its reflection, is formed through controlled scratches, a field of controlled surface damage that lets light do what pigment never could.As the light shifts, so does the boat. From one angle the folds are crisp, the reflection whole, the water black and unbroken. From another, the vessel softens into the surface, as if the water has quietly begun to take it back.Seen from across a room, the piece reads as a single, monumental gesture, a small shape suspended in a vast field of dark.
