White Oak, Quercus alba, is a powerful astringent. It is used internally for hemorrhoids and varicose veins. A decoction can be used as a rectal injection for hemorrhoids, as a dou che to stop bleeding, or as a fomentation for swelling, varicose veins, and other injuries. Use as a gargle for sore throats, or use as a mouthwash for bleeding gums. Use white oak bark powder with black walnut powder as a tooth powder for bleeding gums and loose teeth. Can be constipating when taken internally. Can interfere with digestion (take between meals). Contains large amounts of tannin, which may be associated with mouth and stomach cancer with consistent, long-term use. Use only for short periods internally. No warnings for external use.
