Why a profile carries further The device between them is a wolf turned side on, jaws parted, muzzle lifted, ears pricked forward. It sits on a pale grey disc worked in close stitching, the kind of plain roundel that keeps a dark outline sharp. The animal is grey, white and black throughout, and the one piece of colour on the whole badge is a red kerchief flaring back from its throat. Profile is the older choice for a crest and the more legible one. Face on, a wolf gives you expression. Turned side on it gives you the long muzzle, the sloped brow and the wedge of the ear, which is the shape anyone reads at a glance and at a distance.
