Amazon.com Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville proved that a debutante-attractive woman rocker singing about oral sex could earn the attention of the mostly male rock press corps. But Whitechocolatespaceegg confirms--much as her second album, Whip-Smart, attempted--that Phair can be a pop tunesmith as well. Her songs snap and crackle with giddy doses of '80s new wave, Buddy Holly pop, and Stones rock; her husky voice mostly overcomes its previous, potentially off-putting wobble. And while the clangy "Johnny Feelgood" recalls Phair's earlier tough-sex scenarios, "Polyester Bride," which eavesdrops on a conversation between an advice-giving bartender and a wide-eyed female patron (maybe this season's answer to Semisonic's "Closing Time"), is more demonstrative of Whitechocolatespaceegg's thematic maturation: less titillating but no less womanly. And no less feisty. --Neal Weiss Product description Liz Phair ~ Whitechocolatespaceegg Review Complementing these crafty, character-rich short stories is a range of alt-rock, singer-songwriter strumming and the Stonesy strut that closes "Johnny Feelgood." -- The Los Angeles Times Instruments twang out of tune, strings and frets squeak with each chord change, and Phair's tenuous, conversational singing voice ... explores the dynamics of marital endurance. -- Rolling Stone Neither a doozy like Guyville nor a dud like Whip-Smart, it's merely another of those annoying CDs you rarely play but can't quite bring yourself to get rid of. -- Spin On her third album, Phair returns with another funny, profound and not so profane lo-fi look at guys and the naughty--and sometimes--nasty things they do to girls. -- People Phair and company have cranked up the guitars and drums without becoming hammy or contrived. -- Entertainment Weekly While short on hedonism and long on maturity, spaceegg doesn't skimp on wit, intelligence and candor. -- USA Today [Phair's] cracked tomboy rasp is reaching higher, and it's mixed higher, giving her melodies a Sunday morning afterglow. Whitechocolatespaceegg is easily the Liz Phair set least rhythmically soulful; its lesser selections recall Laurie Anderson, Natalie Merchant, and sea chanteys. -- VibeASIN: B000009OGWVSKU: GGV.B000009OGW.LNCondition: Like NewAuthor/Artist:Phair, LizBinding: Audio CD
