Crafted in France, Circa 1880 , this beautifully proportioned French Louis XVI style sideboard retains its original leather-lined pull-out writing slide, elegant fluted detailing and richly patinated whitewashed finish. Our favourite feature is undoubtedly the original leather-lined writing slide. Still retaining its decorative embossed pattern beneath decades of gentle wear, it transforms the cabinet from a simple sideboard into a wonderfully functional piece. The slide out desk is blind-tooled and block-printed leather, a decorative treatment that was very popular on quality French writing surfaces during the late 19th century. The surviving embossed leather, worn through generations of use, is one of the cabinet’s most charming features With therepeating geometric and foliate motif, applied using heated brass tools or engraved rollers, creating an embossed pattern before the leather was dyed. The split and worn areas are simply honest wear from decades of use. Raised on finely tapered legs with carved corner brackets, this versatile cabinet combines elegance with exceptional practicality. Behind the two panelled doors is generous storage, complemented by two drawers and a full-width leather writing slide hidden discreetly beneath the top.
