Whole Walnuts for Natural Foraging & Gnawing Fun These crunchy, whole walnuts offer the ultimate foraging challenge, encouraging natural gnawing and problem-solving behaviours. Unlike pre-shelled treats, these walnuts come just as nature intended — hard shell and all — providing a tactile, sensory, and rewarding experience for your hamster. These walnuts aren’t just tasty; they’re also a healthy way to support your hamster’s dental health. By gnawing on the hard shell, hamsters naturally wear down their teeth, promoting good dental hygiene. It’s a treat, an activity, and a boredom breaker all in one! How Many Walnuts Do You Get? You can choose 1, 3 or 5 walnuts, or combine each number to get the number of walnuts you want. Since walnuts naturally vary in size and shape, each one will be slightly different, giving your hamster a new puzzle to solve every time. Why Whole Walnuts Are Perfect for Hamsters Whole walnuts aren’t just another snack — they’re a full experience. Here’s why hamsters (and hamster humans) love them: Natural Gnawing Fun: Hamsters love to chew, and walnut shells offer a tough challenge that keeps them busy. Tooth-Friendly: Hamster teeth never stop growing, so chewing on a hard shell helps to naturally wear them down. Foraging Adventure: Hiding a whole walnut in their enclosure encourages natural foraging behaviours. Nutritional Benefits: Walnuts are a source of healthy fats and protein, offering a tasty and nourishing treat when given in moderation. Mental Stimulation: Figuring out how to crack open the shell is a mental workout that keeps hamsters entertained and engaged. How to Use Whole Walnuts with Your Hamster There are so many ways to offer walnuts to your hamster for enrichment and play: Foraging Surprise: Hide a walnut in their enclosure as a surprise for your hamster to discover and crack open. Bonding Treat: Offer a walnut directly during playtime or handling sessions and watch as they puzzle it out. Boredom Breaker: Place a walnut in the enclosure as a boredom breaker that could keep them busy for hours. Some hamsters will gnaw away at the shell as soon as they spot it, while others may stash it away to crack open later. If you have a Dwarf, Robo, or older hamster, you might want to create a small hole in the shell to give them a head start. Each hamster’s approach will be different, but they all love the challenge. Are Whole Walnuts Safe for Hamsters? Yes, 100%! Walnuts are completely safe for hamsters. The hard shell encourages natural gnawing, supporting dental health, while the walnut inside is a healthy source of protein and fats. Since walnuts are naturally high in fats, it’s best to offer them as an occasional treat rather than a daily snack. One walnut every 1-2 weeks is a good guideline to follow. Each walnut is free from additives, preservatives, and artificial treatments — just pure, natural walnuts as nature intended.
