Each box is hand-packed here on our farm with real British wool that’s travelled only a few miles, giving local farmers a fairer return for a product that’s sadly lost most of its market value. Instead of fetching pennies from the Wool Board which is far less than the cost of shearing, we buy it directly and put it to brilliant use — protecting soil, feeding plants, holding water, and supporting birds, wildlife, hens and even worms. 100% British raw sheep’s wool – sourced only from nearby Herefordshire farms. Sheep have been part of the British landscape for centuries, and wool was once one of the UK’s most valuable exports. Now, most farmers receive less for a fleece than it costs to shear it — even though shearing is essential for welfare. It keeps sheep cool, prevents flystrike, and lets flocks graze comfortably through summer. In Herefordshire, our local shearers are experts — many spend the rest of the year shearing in New Zealand or Australia. Watching them at the Royal Welsh Show is a joy: fast, skilful, and vital. But once shorn, the fleeces are often worth so little that it’s barely worth the fuel to deliver them to the Wool Board. That’s why we created Wiggly Woolch — to give local wool value again and to keep it close to home. For beds and borders: 1 kg covers roughly 0.8– 1 m² at a depth of 3–5 cm (a good working thickness to suppress weeds and retain moisture). • For pots and planters: You’ll use less — around 1 kg for 8–10 medium pots, depending on diameter. • Around shrubs or young trees: 1 kg comfortably does 2–3 trees, forming a generous 5 cm layer around the base. Is raw sheep’s wool safe for the garden? Yes. Woolch is made from 100% raw British sheep’s wool, with nothing added by us after shearing. Sheep may receive veterinary treatments when needed, just like other livestock. Farmers must follow strict instructions, including the required time between any treatment applied to the fleece and shearing. This is very different from concentrated sheep dip, which must be handled and disposed of carefully and must never enter ponds or watercourses. Sheep naturally leave small amounts of wool in fields and hedgerows, where it slowly breaks down alongside plants, insects, worms and other wildlife. Woolch simply makes good use of this natural, renewable material in the garden. Used as intended, Woolch is a safe and effective mulch. It helps hold moisture in the soil, suppress weeds and gradually adds organic matter and nutrients as it breaks down. Please do not place raw wool directly into ponds, streams or other watercourses.
