The Story of Keemun Although Qimen has a long history of tea cultivation, Keemun black tea is a relatively recent creation. It was developed in the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty, when a local scholar and failed civil servant, Hu Yuanlong, returned home and began experimenting with black tea production after studying techniques from Fujian. His efforts gave rise to Keemun black tea that quickly gained international recognition for its distinctive fragrance and refined character. By the early 20th century, Keemun had become one of China’s most celebrated export teas, prized in both Europe and beyond for its elegant floral aroma and silky texture.
