Workshop Description Using the natural shapes of local willow and dogwood, combined with the beauty of Japanese and Thai papers, to create your own unique lantern in this one-day workshop. You can work from your own design, or model yours on one of the samples created by Kathleen. You will learn how to select the branches for the structure, how to join them securely with waxed thread or copper wire, and cover them with Japanese or Thai papers. LED flickering tea lights and votive candles, in glass holders, will be added to illuminate your work. Take home something beautiful, functional, and your own creation. Date: Thurs 6th August Time: 9:30am - 5pm (with break for lunch) Tutor: Kathleen Doody Level: All levels welcome, no prior experience needed. Minimum age 16 or 14 if joined by an adult Materials: Materials will be supplied. There will be a selection of branches: willow, dogwood and bamboo, as well as duct and masking tape, copper wire, paste, tissue paper. Participants are asked to please bring: • A notebook/sketchbook and pen or pencil • Wire cutters and/or secateurs or pruning shears • Sharp scissors • A work apron is always a good idea • Your lunch! Participants: Maximum 8 Venue: St Patrick’s Hall, Listowel. V31 P275 About the Artist: Kathleen Doody is a two-time Olive Stack Gallery residency participant from Toronto Island, Canada. She works in pebble mosaics, linocuts, and rug hooking, but her first love is lanterns, both large scale for parades and outdoor spectacles, and smaller ones for homes and gardens. She began creating lanterns in 1982 for an outdoor production at a theatre festival in Japan. Since then, she has worked in Ireland, England, Italy, and across Canada creating lanterns for numerous parades and theatrical events. For 25 years Kathleen organized the annual Toronto Island Fire Parade, which featured lanterns made in her workshops. She has also exhibited and taught workshops internationally.
