Corkscrew Willow, also widely known as Curly Willow or Dragon's Claw, is an exceptionally fast-growing deciduous tree famous for its whimsical, snake-like contorted branches and spiraling twigs. Native to northeastern China, this unique tree forms an upright, rounded canopy filled with narrow, lance-shaped bright green leaves that curl, twist, and wave along the stems before turning a soft buttery yellow in late autumn. In early spring, fuzzy yellow-green catkins emerge alongside new foliage, providing early nectar for emerging bees. However, the tree's most striking ornamental phase occurs in winter after leaf drop, when its bare, olive-green to yellowish-brown branches reveal an intricate, sculptural silhouette of twisted spirals. In landscape design, Corkscrew Willow matures to a height of twenty to thirty feet with a fifteen to twenty-five foot spread, making it a dramatic architectural centerpiece, privacy screen, or moisture-loving specimen near ponds, stream banks, and rain gardens. Its distinctive, curving stems are highly prized in the floral industry and winter craft arrangements, as cut branches last for weeks in fresh water or indefinitely when dried indoors. Scientific Name Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa' (syn. Salix babylonica var. matsudana 'Tortuosa' / Curly Willow) Foliage: Deciduous Fast-growing, multi-stemmed deciduous tree; upright, rounded crown characterized by contorted, contorting, and twisted branches. Leaves: Bright green, simple, alternate, narrow lance-shaped leaves (2–4 inches long) that are distinctly curled and wavy; undersides are pale whitish-green; foliage turns buttery yellow in late autumn. Flowers: Dioecious; produces small, fuzzy, cylindrical yellow-green catkins (1 inch long) in early spring alongside emerging foliage. Fruit: Small, inconspicuous dry capsules held on catkins that open in late spring. Seeds: Minute seeds attached to silky, cottony white hairs dispersed by wind. Bark: Smooth, olive-green to yellowish-brown on young contorted twigs; turns grayish-brown with shallow furrowing and ridges on mature trunks. Life Span: Perennial 30–50 years Mature Height 20–30 ft Mature Width (Spread) 15–25 ft Growth Rate Extremely Fast (Up to 2–3+ ft per year) USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zones 4a–8b (Cold-hardy down to -30°F to -20°F / -34°C to -29°C); Requires ~300–500 winter chill hours PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade (Full sun produces the tightest branch contortions and healthiest foliage density). Water Requirements: Moderate to High; prefers consistently moist to wet soil; thrives near water features. Drought Resistance: Low to Moderate (Requires supplemental irrigation during prolonged dry spells to avoid branch dieback). Soil Type: Highly adaptable; thrives in wet, clay, loamy, sandy, or poorly drained soils; pH 5.6–7.8; highly tolerant of standing water. Deer Resistance: Moderate (Aromatic foliage is generally ignored, though young spring stems may be browsed by wildlife). Pest / Disease Resistance: Susceptible to willow leaf beetles, aphids, borers, and fungal leaf spot or rust in humid climates; aggressive root system seeks water pipes. Pollination: Wind and Insect-pollinated; early spring catkins provide valuable nectar for emerging honeybees. Harvest: Contorted branches cut year-round (especially during autumn/winter dormancy) for floral arrangements and crafts. Yield: Heavy annual production of twisted ornamental stems and branches Storage / Shelf Life: Cut branches last 1–2 weeks fresh in water; dried contorted stems last for years when kept dry indoors. Pruning: Prune in late winter while dormant to shape the canopy, remove deadwood, or harvest decorative branches. Severe coppicing (cutting back near ground level) encourages vigorous, fresh, highly twisted stems. /* This targets the table and the cells inside it */ table, td { border: 1px solid #444444; /* Dark gray border */ border-collapse: collapse; /* This merges the double lines into one clean line */ } /* Adding some padding so the text isn't touching the borders */ td { padding: 10px; }
