An pair of heavy sterling silver wine bottle coasters made by one of England's finest contemporary silversmiths; Anthony Elson. Elson, and a choice number of his contemporaries, ar e enjoying a renaissance of interest in their work due to the high quality and masterful use of classic hand wrought silver smithing techniques they employed. These heavy gauge and finely made coasters are a fine example of this. Each coaster bears the mark of Elson while he was employed by the high end retailer and jeweller or London; Hennell. 1736 Hennell of Bond Street, one of London’s oldest silver smiths and jewellers’, founded by David Hennell. Hennell originally made fashionable silverware for the nobility and landed gentry. David’s son, Robert, turned to jewellery-making in the late 18th century, having bought and sold a magnificent black pearl once owned, it was said, by Marie Antoinette. The coasters are in excellent condition, with with each having a handsome family crest hand engraved into the center of each piece. They will comfortably hold a bottle of wine. Each coaster has full English silver hallmarks for London, England having been made in 1978. Show more
