Best known for its massive display of chalice-shaped magenta flowers on trailing, uniquely lobed leaves. The flowers close up in the evening, open wide in the morning, and stay closed after pollination on long, graceful axillary stalks. Most frequently occurs in dryish, rocky soils in prairies, fields and along roadsides throughout the semi-arid, south-central portion of the Great Plains of the U.S. with scattered populations to the east and west. Wonderful as a groundcover especially mixed in with grass or other groundcovers, gracefully draping over a retaining wall, or in a charming hanging basket/container arrangement. Great in border fronts, rock gardens, wild gardens, and naturalized areas or pocket prairies. Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Can tolerate part to dappled shade in Texas. Too much moisture and shade can cause root rot, especially in northern states. Thrives in depleted, gritty soils. May self-seed in the garden in optimum growing conditions. Its long taproot gives plant good drought tolerance once established but makes transplanting of established plants difficult. Larval host for the Gray Hairstreak. Nectar source for native bees and butterflies.
