Eugène Plon described the scene as follows: "An old man wrapped in his cloak sits bending, with hands outspread, over a chafing-dish. His aged wife has risen to light a candle at the lamp which stands on the table. The cat is warming herself by the fire, and wet clothing is hung up to dry."
