O n the Eastern Front in World War II, tanks frequently relied on winter camouflage to blend into the snowy terrain and reduce their visibility to enemy gunners and aircraft. Crews often applied whitewash or chalk-based paint directly over their standard green or gray finishes, sometimes brushing it on hastily in the field. This temporary coating helped mask tank movements, especially during offensives and ambushes conducted in open, snow-covered landscapes. While imperfect and prone to wearing off, winter camouflage significantly improved concealment and made it harder for enemy forces to spot and target Soviet armoured units during the long, harsh winters of the Eastern Front.
