HeadlineOn the coldest mornings, even the Bow River seems to breathe.Short DescriptionOn a bitterly cold winter morning, steam rises from the Bow River as frost-covered trees cling to its banks. Winter Breath captures a fleeting moment where cold, light and imagination combine to tell a quiet story of endurance in the Canadian Rockies.Extended DescriptionWinter mornings in the Rockies have a character all of their own. As the temperature falls, the warmer waters of the Bow River release great clouds of steam that drift silently through the forest, giving the landscape the appearance of taking slow, measured breaths. What first drew me to this scene, however, wasn't the steam. It was the trees. One in particular leaned precariously over the river, its roots slowly exposed by years of erosion. I found myself wondering how many winters it had endured, clinging stubbornly to the riverbank while the Bow continued its relentless journey toward the prairie. The steamy breath of the river seemed to be calling out to the tree, beckoning it to lay down and rest for a while. The cool blue tones of the final image were a deliberate choice, reflecting not only the atmosphere of that frozen morning but also the biting cold that I was experiencing as I stood behind the camera.Behind the LensSometimes a photograph begins with a feeling rather than a subject.Standing beside the Bow River that morning, I watched the steam rise into the frozen air while my fingers slowly lost their warmth. The obvious photograph was the mist itself, but my attention kept returning to the leaning tree. Its struggle against the river became the story I couldn't stop thinking about. Every year the current steals a little more of the riverbank, yet the tree continues to hold on.The image you see here is the one I wanted to bring home. I deliberately emphasised the cool blue tones—not only because they reflected the atmosphere of that winter morning, but because, if I'm honest, my fingers were turning blue as well.I left that morning with more than a photograph of winter. I left with a reminder that resilience often goes unnoticed until we take the time to look for it. Show more
