The full moon of January carries the name Wolf Moon in the old almanac calendars, and this design takes the phrase at its word. The howling wolf is a silhouette, but the outline has been filled with an entire winter scene instead of flat black. A forest inside the outline Bare branches climb through the chest and legs, thinning as they reach the raised muzzle. A full moon glows behind the shoulder, pale and cold through the trees, with two small birds perched on a twig in front of it. The colours stay in one register throughout: slate teal, misty blue grey, black branchwork and soft white specks in the gaps. Triangles at the edges Along the back, tail and chest the shape fractures into small triangles that drift out onto the wall, and three birds fly clear of the body towards the words wolf moon, set in a stamped rectangle. The effect is of one animal dissolving into the weather around it. The howl itself is a working signal, a way of locating the pack and holding a territory, rather than an answer to moonlight. There is more on that in why wolves howl. Make and size PVC, non-toxic and ecological, made to go on a wall, at W 81 x H 74 cm.
