Why the wolf is the most tattooed animalIt is not only meaning. The wolf happens to be unusually well suited to being drawn on a person. The head has a strong outline that survives being small, an expressive face that carries an emotion without needing detail, and a shape recognisable from a silhouette alone. Very few animals have all three. A bear at small scale is a dark lump; a fox reads as a dog.Add a symbolism flexible enough to mean loyalty, independence, family or ferocity depending on who is wearing it, and you have the most reused subject in the medium. How to choose between the similar onesOur range carries a good many wolf heads, and people usually compare them on subject, which is the least useful criterion since they all show the same animal.Compare line weight instead. Heavy-lined designs stay legible small, survive being worn on a curve and read from a distance. Fine-lined designs carry far more detail but need flat skin, close viewing and careful application.Decide which of those two situations you are actually in, and the choice makes itself. The designThe head faces straight out at the viewer and is split down the middle. One half is realistic greyscale, fur and whiskers picked out in fine detail. The other dissolves into watercolour, violet, magenta, teal, lime and yellow thrown outward in splashes and spatter, with a thin drip running down from the chin. It sits firmly in the detailed camp rather than the bold one.9.8 by 6 cm, compact and upright, suiting a forearm, shoulder or ankle. Our article on the wolf totem covers the meanings.
