Peter Smith, born in Vancouver in 1972, is a Kwakwaka'wakw artist who began carving in 1995. His Indigenous name, Giq-Kalas, translates to "Sons of Great Importance." He honed his craft under the tutelage of master carvers Simon Dick and Simon James, cultivating a unique style that honors the traditions of his culture. Additionally, Sonija Triebwasser instructed him in the art of creating Northwest Coast silver jewelry. A 15" hand drum, masterfully hand-painted and autographed, includes a padded drumstick and produces a very pleasant tone that resonates. Show more
