Why wolves lick at each other's mouths The gesture at the centre of this picture has a job behind it. Pups lick at the muzzles of adults coming back from a hunt, and the licking prompts the adult to bring food back up for them. Wolves never drop the habit. In a grown pack the same movement works as a greeting after a separation, and as a way of settling things down again after friction. Deep snow is where a pack shows its shape most clearly.
