The image everybody knowsTwo wolves in profile beneath a full moon is about the most reproduced arrangement in wolf art, and there is a reason for that. A bright disc at one end of the picture and a pair of hard-edged heads at the other is as strong a shape as you can put on a canvas. The moon has nothing to do with itWorth knowing, and it does not spoil the picture. Wolves do not howl at the moon. They raise their muzzles because pointing the sound upward and outward carries it further, in the same way a person cups their hands to shout across a valley. They howl more at night because they are active at night, and a full moon simply makes that the night people notice. Our article on why wolves howl covers the acoustics, and the legend that grew up around it.High contrast, easy to placeA bright moon against a near black sky reads from anywhere in a room and in poor light.
