A canopy shaped like a howl A bare winter tree carries two pictures at once here. Follow the branches and you get a slim trunk rising into a fine net of twigs. Follow the outline instead and the crown becomes the profile of a wolf with its head tipped back, muzzle to the sky, ears and ruff cut from the same edge. At the foot of the trunk a much smaller wolf sits and howls in answer. Everything is one flat black, so the whole illusion rests on where the silhouette turns. Forest as home ground The pairing is well chosen. Grey wolves are animals of tree cover across much of their range, from the boreal forest of Canada and Scandinavia to the mixed woodland of Poland, Romania and the mountains of northern Spain. A forest pack may hold a territory of a few hundred square kilometres, worked along river lines, ridges and old logging tracks. In that habitat sound reaches further than sight, which is why the howl matters so much and why it can carry several kilometres under the canopy. We go into that in why wolves howl.
