Scrollwork and three heads Three wolf heads rise from a field of engraved scrollwork on this oval buckle, one large and facing outward at the centre, two smaller ones in profile above and below it. The ground behind them is filled edge to edge with curling foliate lines, and that crowded ground is what pushes the heads forward. They read deep because everything around them is broken up. The outer ring is left smooth and polished, framing all that detail the way a bezel frames a stone. In the photograph the buckle is a warm gold, and the heads catch more light than the recessed scrollwork behind them. Below it, the leather strap carries a deep scaled pattern with a dark shine to it. Three heads together read differently from one. A single head is a sentinel; three is company, which is nearer the truth of the animal. Wolves spend almost the whole of their lives with family around them, hunting, travelling and resting as a group. If you are choosing a piece to carry, the wolf as a totem animal is a good place to start.
