The carbon pencil has a fine grain, and applies smoothly and precisely in rich, velvety, matte black lines. Carbon pencils have a consistent softness, for superior blending and texture. The 5mm core is encased within a natural cedar wood barrel, making the pencils easy to use, and easy to sharpen for detail work. Carbon pencils combine the advantages of a graphite pencil (sharp lines) and a charcoal pencil (rich black lines) without the disadvantage of breakage and excessive smudging. They enable the artist to produce dramatic black marks, and are perfect for rapid and expressive sketches and drawings. Wolff’s Carbon Pencils can also be combined with water to create washes in combination with graphic marks. This makes them a perfect pencil for sketch and wash on the go. They are available in four degrees of hardness — B (hardest), 2B, 4B, or 6B (softest).
