Held within those uterine walls. Bumping gently from side to side. Limbs stretching. Muscle and bone, finding resistance. The process of our birthing ritual begins. Rhythmic pressure and earth’s gravity collide. Dark night’s motion ebbs and flows. Slipping out held safely. Within the caul. A warm translucent sac of veiled skin. Falling onto golden straw and soft sawdust. She turns to murmur, blow, sniff and lick, awakening my silken frame. Soft tentacle roots still attached to tiny hoofs. Looking up through glassy eyes seeing the wonder of my majestic mother mare for the first time. I love her. And, I am her miracle golden foal. Connected by a long winding umbilical cord. I curl up, wet with the morning dew of amniotic fluid. She turns her nose to nudge me up onto all fours. Unsteady, unsure, fragile and new. I seek safety in her shadow. Milk at her teat. Connection threading lifetimes. Within one another forever."
