Intended to bolster the rank of the German army Luftwaffe Field divisions were raised. Initially they remained under the command of the Luftwaffe due to political differences between the Airforce and Military tradition. While mostly used as rear-guard defensive units the Luftwaffe field divisions were especially involved in the defence of the Belarussian city of Vitebsk and the attrition of the Courland Pocket. The soldiers of the Luftwaffe were issued with the distinct Feldblau uniforms which greatly contrasted with the standard German military uniform.
