With text from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, this original poster draws a connection between WWI and the Civil War, depicting a haunting, almost post-apocalyptic view of New York H arbor after a bombing. The Statue of Liberty lies in ruins, with the head of the statue lying in the water, facing toward the sky, as German bombers fly overhead and everything on the ground appears to be aflame. About the artist Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) was born in Pennsylvania, and worked and studied in Europe for most of his career. He was a contemporary of James Whistler and William Morris.
