Yuzen washi paper, also known as Chiyogami Paper, is known for its brilliant and intense color patterns with gold metallic overlays. Made with a traditional base using Kozo, Mitsum ata and Gampi fibers, Yuzen washi paper is so strong and durable that you can sew it and use it in textile art. It starts as a base sheet of high content Kozo and then each color is then silkscreened by hand, one layer at a time, onto the paper. This step requires considerable time as each color must fully dry before the next color is applied. The final layer is usually a gold or silver metallic overlay, which provides shiny highlights that catch light and attention. This technique has been passed down since the Edo period.
