Twenty years on, When It Falls sounds as warm and unhurried as ever. Zero 7's second album arrived in 2004 and immediately announced itself as something special, peaking at number four on the UK albums chart and spending 24 weeks in total on the charts on its way to selling over a quarter of a million copies. Stateside it entered the Billboard Dance and Electronic chart at number three and stayed in the top 20 for nearly thirteen months, a remarkable run for a record so resolutely unconcerned with chasing trends. The album's secret weapon is its cast of voices. Sia and Sophie Barker both appear, lending their distinct personalities to "Somersault," "In Time," and "Speed Dial No. 2," while Tina Dico brings an aching tenderness to "Home" and Mozez adds his signature warmth to "Warm Sounds." It is a record that feels like a long, sunlit afternoon, layered and immersive without ever demanding too much of the listener. Pressed on 2LP black vinyl, this is the definitive way to own one of electronic music's most timelessly beloved albums and the essential soundtrack to any laidback summer listening session. Show more
