Ziggurats were a type of building in ancient Mesopotamia used by Sumerians and Babylonians as temples. They were built on a raised ground, with receding levels of steps leading up to a flat roof, where it is thought would be a shrine. The Mesopotamians believed that these pyramid temples connected heaven and earth. Ziggurat building experienced a revival in the 20th Century, and many contemporary ziggurat buildings exist. This painting takes as its source material one based in California which is now used as a government building. Show more
