This volume represents the first set of Deeds recorded for Monroe County, Tennessee. This county was formerly a part of the Hiwassee Purchase from the Cherokee Nation in 1819. Foun d in these deeds are many of the Cherokee who received a section of land for signing the purchase. These one square mile tracts were normally around the home site of that persons with their house in the center. These abstracts retain all of the essential elements of the deed with names, dates and locations. Example from this volume: Page 182, No. 95 - DEED - Smoke of the Cherokee Nation to William Ainsworth for $1000, approx. 640 acres on Tellico River; originally granted to Bell Rattle under the provision of the treaties of 8 July 1817, and 27 February 1819, between the United States and the Cherokee Nation of Indians butted and bounded as follows: NE corner of Sec. 27 T2 R3E of meredian, with a line run equidistant between the improvement of Bell Rattle and the Smoke, passing through improvements and crossing Tellico River, embracing the Bell Rattles house.
