Monroe County, located in southern east Tennessee, was formed after the Hiwassee Purchase from the Cherokee Nation in 1819. These deed books reflect the entries made during the 183 4-1836 time period. These abstractions contain the most vital of the information given in the records including the names, dates and locations as well as other information that is there. Example from this volume: Page 137 No. 66 - DEED OF TRUST - 1st John Cole, 2nd: James A. Haire, 34d: Jacob Baker. John Cole is indebted to Jacob Baker for $475, for securing the payment Cole for $475 hath sold unto Haire 3 tracts of land; first NE qtr of Sec. 19, T1 R3E in Hiwassee District; second, 160 acres on Island Creek adj. John Bogard and Amos Carson, being the same on which John Cole now lives; third, 80 acres adj. Richard Stephens and Thomas L. Twomey; the condition of the above is such that Cole is indebted to Baker $475, if Cole shall pay said sum then the above deed to be void; but if Cole shall make default, then Haire shall proceed to sell land for ready cash to be sufficient to satisfy debt.John Cole [seal] - James A.
